1 of only 190 Indy Pace Car Replicas Produced by Ford Motor Co.
This is a 1964 1/2 Mustang Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Replica. It is one of the 190 Indy Pace Cars produced by Ford Motor Company. This is one of the original 180 cars produced in April 1964. Ford produced 10 more cars in May when they realized they were 10 cars short on the number of cars promised for their checkered flag and green flag promotional event.
This car was bought new on 8-1-64, by Mr. Edward Kent Drumeller at the Bluff City Motors Ford Dealership in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Mr. Drumeller was stationed in the Navy in Washington and was told that his new Mustang was available for delivery. Upon coming back to Missouri on leave to pick up the car, he was not happy to see the "writing" on the car. Rather than lose the sale, the dealership removed the "writing" and Mr. Drumeller took delivery of his new pony car. (Incidentally, he immediately purchased a new set of the Indy 500 graphics in case he wanted to put them back on his car.) Mr. Drumeller drove the car for several years. Eventually, his younger brother drove the car. Then his mother drove the car until her death.
The car was built April 27, 1964. It has the 260 V8, automatic transmission, power steering, AM radio, padded visors and back up lights. The car has just undergone a two year restoration to return it to its former pony car new car condition.
The original pink slips from August 1, 1964 are included in a scrapbook. The scrapbook also includes:
1. A picture of the original owner in uniform dated October 1964.
2. The original Ford promotional post card with his notes on the back.
3. The window invoice.
4. 64 1/2 press release.
5. Indy car facts.
6. Jim Smart's Mustang Monthly article.
7. Indy cars found.
8. 64 1/2 general information.
The key chain, rear license plate frame and the rear license plate are from the Bluff City Motor Ford Dealership where the car was sold new in August 1964.
